Chicago Mayor: Bears aren’t moving, they should focus on the Packers

The mayor of Chicago hit back at the Bears this afternoon after the team said they were considering buying a stadium-sized property in the suburbs.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot dismissed the Bears’ decision as just a bargaining ploy and said she wanted the team to focus on more important things, like beating the Packers.

“Our city is home to some of the best sports teams in the world who have played a vital role in reopening the city,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “As part of the city’s takeover, many organizations are doubling down on their commitment to Chicago, and we expect the Chicago Bears to follow suit. The Bears are locked in a lease at Soldier Field until 2033. Additionally, this Bears announcement comes amid negotiations for improvements to Soldier Field. This is clearly a negotiating tactic the Bears have used before. As a season-long season subscriber and fan of the Bears, I am committed to keeping the name “Chicago” on our football team. And like most Bears fans, we want the organization to focus on building a winning team on the pitch, finally beating the Packers and being relevant last October. Everything else is noise.

The property the Bears are bidding on is Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights, about 30 miles from Soldier Field.
