NAC Men’s Basketball Preview: Harmer’s ‘Old Man’s Game’ Focuses on Yellowjackets Success | Article 10

In pickup basketball circles, Madrid-Waddington senior center forward Drew Harmer has the “old man’s game.”

It is a game where a player excels in mastering all the fundamentals as part of the team concept. Harmer’s simple yet sophisticated ‘game’ is accentuated by the athleticism that made it a top All-Northern Athletic Conference player in basketball, in soccer which he was honored as the MVP in defense of the United Nations. ‘East at the NAC this fall and golf.

He uses constant movement with and without the ball to win duels for the rebound position and to create shooting space inside and outside. He uses crisp exit passes to start quick breaks and efficiently moves the ball in and out in half-court sets. His offensive repertoire also includes well-timed 3-point corners and multi-stop practices in the lane where he often converts second chances by following his shot.

Harmer never takes possession of the defense, denying access to the post and dribbling penetration, pushing opponents off the board and closing in on peripheral shots.

Its old-fashioned approach travels and translates well into any style of basketball.

“Harmer does so much for us and he’s so fundamentally sound. He’s big enough to play at the post and he handles the ball well enough to play guard. He’s got a very balanced game and he’s a balanced person off the field, ”Yellowjackets coach Aaron Jones said of the three-year-old.

“He’s played basketball a lot and he and Jacob Morgan work really well together. Jacob has a good feel on the inside and receives a lot of backhands.

Harmer combined with sixth marksman Morgan and Troy Peck to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 3-1 start this season. The Jackets beat Colton-Pierrepont and Lisbon to win their own John Dinneen Memorial Tournament, then defeated Middleburgh and lost to Mayfield, two teams from Section 2, in two games played at Johnstown this weekend.

Harmer delivered a multi-faceted performance in the tournament final against Lisbon with 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocked shots. He says he developed his skills and shortness through intense training from Jones and facing faster, bigger players in pickup matches at SUNY Canton where his brother, Brennan, all-time top scorer. de Madrid-Waddington, is a second year guard.

“Playing with Brennan and the guys from SUNY Canton has really helped me a lot. I learned so much from Brennan,” said Harmer. “I’ve had great coaches and played basketball a lot over the years. years.”

His father, Bryan, varsity coach and athletic director of the Yellowjackets, scored 1,444 career points at the Knox Memorial (1981-84). He played for his father, trainer Dick Harmer, a crowd regular at Yellowjackets games.

After the Dinneen tournament title match, Drew Harmer said it’s all about the team.

“We played with a lot of energy and the guys on the bench gave us really good minutes. We really want to have a good season, ”he said.

A season to resume from its second campaign which ended with a best times scenario followed by the worst times shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic.
